A key on a pedestrian gate is a security assumption from a different era. Keys get copied without the owner knowing. A cleaner who’s been let go still has one unless you change the cylinder. A family member locks out a teenager because they grabbed the wrong ring. The physical key has no access log — you can’t know when the gate was used or by whom.
The JHR gate is pre-wired and framed to accept smart lock modules from standard access hardware brands. The lock housing in the frame stile accepts a combined fingerprint-and-keypad unit on the exterior face; the interior side has a lever handle. The cylinder and bolt mechanism sit inside the frame — nothing protrudes on the hinge stile or the latch stile.
Access options, individually or in combination:
PIN keypad: 4 to 8 digit codes, separate codes per user, temporary codes for visitors or contractors with automatic expiry dates. No physical key required; access management from the lock’s control panel.
Fingerprint reader: capacitive outdoor sensor, up to 100 enrolled fingerprints, recognition under 0.5 seconds. Works on wet or lightly soiled fingers on current-generation sensors. No card to forget.
RFID card and fob: 125 kHz EM or 13.56 MHz Mifare format. Cards are issued and revoked from the administrator panel without visiting the gate or calling a locksmith. The cleaner you’ve let go loses access the moment you revoke the card — no cylinder swap required.
Bluetooth smartphone app: unlock via proximity when you approach with your phone, or via app button. Remote unlock over internet for letting in a guest when you’re not home. Access log visible in the app — who entered and when.
RF remote handset: 433 MHz standard remote for keyless entry from a distance, useful when arriving with both hands occupied.
All configurations include a mechanical key cylinder as a backup — relevant if a battery fails or a device malfunctions. Battery life on current-generation smart locks runs to about 12 months of normal residential use; a low-battery indicator activates before the gate is at risk of locking out.
The pedestrian gate is visible at eye level from the street and passed through multiple times a day. The infill panel does a significant amount of visual work on the property frontage — it’s not background.
Four standard infill configurations, all compatible with the same frame and hinge system:
Laser-cut ornamental panel: CNC-cut from flat aluminum sheet in botanical, geometric, or bespoke patterns. Full visual enclosure with decorative surface texture. The same pattern options available in the JHR fence and screen range, so the pedestrian gate can match a decorative fence panel exactly.
Horizontal privacy slats: parallel aluminum slats at adjustable spacing. Partial privacy with a contemporary, low-profile character consistent with modern residential architecture. Slat spacing adjusts from near-opaque to open, depending on the privacy requirement.
Vertical picket panel: open vertical members at standard spacing. Traditional boundary aesthetic, maximum airflow and visibility through the gate. Works where the surrounding fence is vertical in character and a horizontal insert would read out of context.
Perforated sheet: uniform small-hole pattern across the full panel. Partial privacy with a clean industrial-modern character. Available in standard perforation sizes or custom hole patterns for projects where a specific visual density is required.
All options are available in the same RAL color as the frame or in a contrasting color for a two-tone effect. Mixed panels — for example, solid privacy board on the lower section and laser-cut ornamental on the upper section — are available on request.

Two posts, one on each side of the opening, set in concrete or bolted to existing masonry columns. The hinge post is the structural anchor; footing depth and post fixing method are specified in the installation drawings based on gate height and local wind load.
The gate leaf hangs on 3D-adjustable hinges. Height, lateral alignment, and gasket compression are all adjustable after hanging — useful because post footings are rarely perfectly plumb after they’ve cured, and the hinge adjustment accommodates whatever small deviation exists without needing to relay the footing.
The smart lock module fits into the pre-routed housing in the frame stile and wires to the battery compartment. Initial programming — administrator PIN, fingerprint enrollment, device pairing — follows the lock manufacturer’s app and typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. JHR provides installation drawings and a hardware kit with every order; remote technical support is available for first-time smart lock installations.
Ongoing maintenance: the aluminum frame needs no repainting. Hinge adjustment is done with the 3D hinge screws if the gate settles slightly in the first few months after installation — normal for any gate that’s operating in variable temperature conditions. Smart lock battery replacement is once per year. RFID cards and fobs are managed from the lock administrator panel without going to the gate.
Gate width, height, infill panel style, RAL color, and preferred smart access method are enough to start a quote. One working day for specification sheet and pricing.
